SR1 was born when racers began fitting Yamaha R1 motorcycle engines into Pro/Mod Yamaha Rhino race chassis to create a faster, more exciting driver’s class for UTV short course racing. Today new SR1s are built on a purpose-built SR1 base center frame.
The Rhino years. Before SR1 there was the Super Rhino: a 2004 Yamaha Rhino 450 with a Honda CBR600 engine that the Wellers raced at the Rhino Nationals and the Parker desert race and took on plenty of dune trips. Corry was also racing CORR in an 800cc race Rhino. It started life as a 660 and got everything: Crankworks stroker cranks, big pistons, Bronco dry clutches, XMF long travel and Walker Evans shocks. It was fast, but it was never reliable. In one race Corry was leading, close to the end, when she blew a belt. The team was gutted. They couldn’t keep spending that kind of money just to keep breaking, so they pulled out before the season was over. By then the RZR 800 was out, the Teryx was getting fast, and the Rhino was a thing of the past in short course racing. That was 2008.
The idea. Not long after leaving CORR, Jason saw a Yamaha R1 engine sitting in a friend’s garage and thought: what if that went in the race Rhino? With Greg and the whole crew at Lone Star Racing building the parts Jason designed, they made the first R1 mounting kit, with an eccentric carrier and drive hubs in place of the Super Rhino’s less reliable pillow-block bearings, jackshaft and starter-gear reverse. That was the birth of the SR1. Jason’s twin brother Jeff and the Weller Racing crew helped get it running, and the first test drive went straight down the road by the shop: 68 mph in first gear, a 2.5-inch Magnaflow muffler screaming at 13,800 rpm. It was the coolest thing ever.
Snowflake. They buttoned it up and decided to take it to the Whiplash race in Snowflake, Arizona. Corry said there was no way they’d make it. They drove up from Chandler, unloaded, registered and lined up for the race all at once. It had rained and there was mud everywhere, and the car had no reverse. Jason took the first lap until the B&M shifter cable broke, leaving him stuck in second gear and barely making it through the mud. For the second lap Jeff took the wheel and they rigged it so he worked the gas while Jason reached over from the passenger seat to shift. They made it to the finish, and both of them had the most fun ever. That was the SR1’s first outing, straight from the shop.
Building it up. Every part that broke got redesigned and made better. Tyler Herzog and Gary Thompson were the second and third racers to commit to the R1 conversion, and both were there with Corry for the SR1 demo race in Southern California. Corry also raced the SR1 at a Whiplash event on the pavement at Firebird. Then the Wellers convinced Lucas Oil to give the class a chance, and for 2010 LOORRS said yes: SR1 was officially a series class. Racers started buying up old race Rhinos to build their own, including Doug Mittag, Kyle LeDuc and Ryan Beat.
The goal has always been the same: keep every SR1 close in power and handling, so the racing stays close and the class never turns into a horsepower or money contest. That is why the engine stays stock, the tire stays a 26" 6-ply knobby, and the rules change as little as possible.
SR1 has raced in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, the Arizona Short Course Championship (ASCC), the Glen Helen Short Course Series, the Lucas Oil Regional Series in Arizona, Southern California and Utah, its own SR1 Championship Series and the Great American Short Course (GAS). ASCC (Arizona Short Course Championship)
2010–2011The Arizona Short Course Championship ran SR1 alongside UTV Unlimited at Speedworld, Firebird and Kingman. ASCC ran in 2010 and 2011, billed as ASCC/Lucas Oil Regional AZ; from 2012 the series ran as Lucas Oil Regional Arizona.
2011 SR1 main-event winners (MyLaps): Jason Weller won all seven timed mains. Other SR1 drivers that year: Keaton Swane, Emilio Rubago, Dan Kelly, Brad Griego, Adam Gruender and Justin Brisbon. No official 2011 points table survives, so the runner-up is not listed.

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (national)

Lucas Oil Regional Arizona
2012–2020The home series of SR1, run mostly at Wild Horse Pass, Firebird, Speedworld and Tucson. Split into Pro and Pro Am classes for 2018–2019.

Glen Helen Short Course Series (Lucas Oil Regional)
2010In 2010, the first year of the Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series, the Southern California region ran as the Glen Helen Short Course Off Road Racing Series, alongside ASCC in Arizona. In 2011 Lucas Oil and Glen Helen expanded it into the Lucas Oil Regional Series – Southern California.

2012–2019Created by Jason Weller in 2012 to bring Arizona and California SR1 racers together: a 5–6 round championship run inside the Lucas Oil regional events, with a $1,000 purse at the 2012 Las Vegas finale. Scoring was 50/48/46… per race plus 1–5 qualifying bonus points.

Great American Short Course (GAS)
2021–2023After the Lucas Oil series ended, Lee Perfect and Dave Cole launched GAS in 2021, and the Weller Racing SR1 UTV class came with it. Rounds ran at the SBC Fairgrounds in Victorville, Glen Helen and, in 2023, King of the Hammers.
